In search of his long lost son, travelling cardsharp Brady Hawkes (Kenny Rogers) befriends young hotshot Billy Montana (Bruce Boxleitner) and together they form a formidable partnership, taking a perilous train ride to Yuma, California in order to track down Brady’s son and face stepfather Rufe Bennett (Clu Gulager).

Billy, Brady and his son Jeremiah are caught in the middle of a train robbery, held up by the notorious McCourt Gang. Taking Jeremiah hostage, the gang demand a million dollar ransom and it is up to Brady to assemble a posse to aid liberate his son, including the fastest female gun in the west Kate Muldoon (Linda Evans).

Brady and Billy are drawn into a controversial conflict between the Sioux Nation and the corrupt US cavalry. Enlisting the aid of schoolteacher Mary Collins (Linda Gray), they discover an alarming conspiracy that has deprived the Sioux people of their precious supplies.
